Who’s Turning 70
“Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be 70″.
Well the “terribly strange” has arrived for the duo, because this year along with other huge names in music like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Neil Diamond, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle turn 70.
Jagger – Rather Be Dead
Dylan (“May you stay forever young”) plays several Australian dates in April before his May birthday. Roger Daltrey (“Hope I die before I get old”) and Paul McCartney (“When I’m 64”) will join the 70 club next year, while Mick Jagger, who is reported to have said, several grandchildren ago, “I’d rather be dead than singing ‘Satisfaction’ at 45” turns 70 in 1213.
As the New York Times noted “A rock ’n’ roll septuagenarian was someone the gerontologist Robert Butler could have only dreamed of in 1968, when he coined the term “ageism” to describe the way society discriminates against the old,” but the rockers of the 60s just refuse to lie down.
Neil Diamond Keeping On
Asked how he feels about turning 70, Neil Diamond has said it feels like it should be significant, “but, honestly, I don’t feel any more grown up than when I was 25. I laugh at the same things, cry at the same things and probably haven’t learned a whole lot.”
“I won’t change what I’m doing. I like the tempo of my life and my career. And I don’t expect to make any changes or back down because of numbers. As long as I feel good and I am healthy, which I am, I’m going to continue and let the chips fall where they may.
“The fact I’m maturing only makes me more excited about my future work because I know there’s only a limited time. But I look forward to the future as a way to expand the work that I do and to find new and exciting ways to express myself musically.”
Julie Christie Sexy at 70
Last year Beatles drummer Ringo Starr celebrated his 70th by playing at Radio City Music Hall and said his new hero was BB King, who was still jamming in his 80s.
Non musicians joining the club include business woman and publisher Martha Stewart and actress Julie Christie who in 2009 at the age of 68 was ranked 2nd “Sexiest Women In The World” in the Hungarian magazine Periodika.
