Berries for Better Health # 3

Camu camu - berries for better health

Berries may not be the giants of the produce world, size-wise, but these diminutive fruits punch well above their weight in health benefits (and let’s not forget flavor!).

High levels of antioxidants and photochemicals make berries the ultimate anti-ageing foods, packing proven boons for your brain, skin and heart health. They can even reduce the risks of diabetes and certain cancers.

Presenting number three in our series on the best berries for your health: Camu Camu Berries

(be sure to check out Berries #1, Acai and Berries #2, Blueberries)

Camu Camu Can Remake You

Camu Camu Berries seem to be the new Amazonian superstar on the block (no offence, Acai). These small red berries are jam-packed with a host of health benefits, including:

  • Sixty times the vitamin C of an Orange
  • Valine, an essential Amino Acid that prevents muscle breakdown and  vital for cognitive and nervous system function
  • Leucine, another essential Amino Acid, needs for bone and tissue growth
  • Serine: yet another essential Amino! This one’s for good digestive function
  • Rich levels of flavonoids, powerful antioxidants
  • Gallic acid, another antioxidant, which as a nice bonus appears to have anti-viral and anti-fungal properties
  • Ellagic acid, also an antioxidant, and believed to protect against diabetes
  • High levels of Potassium, essential for heart and kidney health

Camu Camu berries have a delightfully tangy flavor and are particularly prized in Brazil as anti-cold and –flu fighters. Eyes, skin, gums, tendons and ligaments are also all thought to particularly benefit from eating Camu Camu.

There is some concern Camu Camu may interfere with chemo therapy, however. If you’re going through chemo it’s best to discuss Camu Camu with your specialist first perhaps before imbibing astronomical amounts of the tasty little gems.
