Seven Reasons To Sleep Naked
One of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous remarks – her confession when asked what she wore to bed that it was “Chanel No 5” was reprised by the fashion house into an ad campaign more than 50 years after her death.
Her characteristically a breathless admission in 1960 that “she didn’t want to say ‘nude’ – but that’s the truth” was captured on tape and used in the Chanel ads. Even today she’d be in a minority when it comes to sleeping bare.
Surveys show less than ten per cent of us sleep naked. But in the 50 years since Marilyn died a lot more scientific evidence has emerged to support the idea of sleeping naked for reasons that go way beyond the simply sexy.
The List: Good Reasons To Sleep Naked
- You’ll have a happier marriage
People who wear nothing in bed are most content in relationships, according to a poll reported in the Daily Mail
Of 1,004 Britons surveyed, 57 per cent of those who sleep in the nude said they were happy in their relationships, compared with 48 per cent of those in pyjamas, 43 per cent of nightie wearers and 38 per cent of those in onesies. And while only four in ten Poms slept naked, nearly half of over-55s bared all.
That emotional closeness may be thanks to feeling more of the “cuddle hormone” oxytocin, which is also involved with sexual responsiveness and orgasm.
Skin to skin touching (with intimacy, a massage, intercourse, or cuddling) is all that is required to boost oxytocin levels giving feelings of closeness and bonding.
And there’s nothing more libido-deflating than flannel pyjamas. Without them you’re likely to enjoy far more opportunities for intimacy.
- You’ll Sleep Better
According to The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, your body temperature naturally declines as a part of your Circadian Rhythm as you sleep deeply.
Wearing pyjamas could disrupt this natural drop in temperature and, as a result, disrupt your body’s sleep cycle.
Disruption in the natural decline of body temperature is also directly linked to insomnia. If you can’t cool down, you are not going to enjoy the deeper stages of sleep.
- You’ll boost your anti-aging hormones
Anything that helps you get more sleep and more sex – like sleeping naked – also does wonders for keeping your whole body vibrant and youthful.
If you’re trussed up in a neck to toe nightie there’s a good chance you’ll over heat and disrupt the release of your main anti-aging hormones, melatonin and growth hormone.
When we sleep in total darkness, melatonin is released, triggering a very slight but critical cool-down in the body. As body temperature drops, growth hormone is released and works its regenerative magic.
The Huffington Post reports sleep itself has been touted as a magic pill precisely because it encourages the release of this youthful hormone. In a study published in the journal “Sleep”, researchers showed that you can get safe, legal doses of growth hormone — and even improve athletic performance — just by hitting the sack for a deep, restorative sleep.
- You’ll reduce your belly fat
This one seems like a major incentive to anyone keen to slim down! Studies have shown that as you cool down at night and growth hormone increases, cortisol will also decrease with healthy sleep patterns.
On the nights that you do not sleep enough, you will wake with a level of cortisol that is abnormally high. This is known to trigger your appetite — especially for comfort foods (muffins, cookies, etc.) and your tendency to overeat, increase tension/anxiety and fuel belly fat — even in people who are otherwise thin.
- You’ll keep your privates healthy
Jennifer Landa, MD, author of The Sex Drive Solution for Women says sleeping naked is healthy for your downstairs lady bits.
Because your vagina has a climate similar to a tropical rainforest, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast.
Cosmo magazine suggests going commando and airing out is a great way to prevent infections like candidiasis.
- You won’t be tempted to be a slob
We all know the temptation of jumping straight into pyjamas and dressing gown when we get home from work. We feel like a drone, but it’s just so tempting!
But then you become the person who doesn’t even want to answer the door in case someone sees you’re ready for bed at 6pm!
Sleeping in the nude means you won’t be ready for bed until you’re actually going to bed — and forces you to at least change into some stylish leisure wear when you get home from work. then you’ll be all set for that surprise invitation to pop out for dessert!
- You’ll feel more confident
Really – as a result of all of the above. Sleeping naked will make you feel more appreciated (if you don’t sleep alone) but even if you do, you’ll feel more comfortable in your own skin.
When you are comfortable with your body, you act more confidently which makes you happy and is viewed as attractive by others.
And just to prove you’re “worth it” why not develop your own version of Marilyn’s Chanel No 5 story. Find a favourite fragrance and pamper yourself with a shower of bath before bedtime using it as a gel, bath oil or body lotion.
Spoiling yourself in this small way is just another way of showing yourself you deserve appreciation! It will give you pleasure and bedtime will become associated with something enjoyable and relaxing – a great cue for a good night’s sleep! All because you made the call to sleep naked!
