Wondering what a successful relationship looks like? New York photographer Brandon Stanton has captured some time-tested relationships at the height of their commitment.

Below, some of his photographed couples share their top tips for making it through the years successfully. But don’t take our word for it—read for yourself! Perhaps his roving lens has uncovered some lessons we can all learn from.

Tip #1. Maintaining a Great Sense of Humour:

Photographer: “What’s your favourite thing about your wife?”

Man: “I can’t say that in public!”

Tip #2. And an Equally Great Sense of Passion:

Photographer: “What’s your favourite thing about your wife?”

Man: “She’s sexy!”

Tip #3. Being Sweet and Sensitive (Even Secretly):

Woman: “He’s really sweet and sensitive.”

Man [Rolling eyes]: “Oh God”

Tip #4. Dedication.

Man: “I visit her every day. Even when the mind is gone, the heart shows through.”

Tip #5. Shared Ideals and Dreams.

Woman: “We were both involved in the Civil Rights Movement. We met 47 years ago on a picket line.”
