George Clooney is riding high, showing his age (50) on screen in The Descendants playing a “schlub” (Clooney’s term) with untidy hair and decidedly unstylish clothes.

As Hawaiian real estate lawyer Matt King – a helpless and vulnerable character who is “smart about everything except the human heart” – he says he got to rediscover “what it was like not to be confident.

“I just have to share getting older with everybody in the world on screen and it’s a little trickier, but I’m OK with it,” he says.

Oscar Favourite as He Greys

He’s an Oscar favourite, but says “Ageing on screen is not the easiest thing to do.

“There are guys who did it really well, and Paul Newman probably did it the best because he figured out that, at about 55 years old, it’s probably best to start looking at character parts.

“You’re getting greyer and getting older and you start thinking that there’s a point when people aren’t going to want to see you on screen any more, and you have to beat them to the punch.

“You don’t want to be the last guy at the party going, ‘Where did everybody go?’ You want to be ahead of the curve, not behind it.”

Being Father & Husband

The movie is a bitter sweet drama about a man trying to look after his two daughters after  a boating accident leaves his wife comatose, only to discover his wife had been unfaithful and was planning to leave him.

He’s forced by circumstance to become the father he was meant to be, the husband he’d forgotten he was, trying to hold it all together while his world is falling apart.
